80. DANCE LESSONS

May 24, 2026

My first dance lesson wasn’t at Carnegie Hall, but it’s where my sister and I learned ballet. Most likely the same studio where Jerome Robbins and his sister danced.

“Robbin’s first exposure to dance was watching his sister practice and sitting on the floor during her lessons—most particularly classes with Alys Bentley in Studio 61 at Carnegie Hall.” (Source: Jerome Robbins: His Life, His Theater, His Dance by Deborah Jowitt)

“He went…to Yeichi Nimura for a demanding combination of modern dance and ballet that also featured detailed Asian-influenced work for the hands.” (Source: Jerome Robbins: His Life, His Theater, His Dance by Deborah Jowitt)
